ABACOA GOLF CLUB (561-622-0036)
Florida Golf Course Review 12/11/05
Abacoa is a lush Joe Lee designed championship course built in 1999, featuring outstanding conditioning and
landscaping along fairways surrounded by serene lakes and native vegetation. Unusual for this section of the
state, the terrain at Abacoa raises and drops up to 30/40 feet from tee to green, with the elevation changes
creating challenge and aesthetic beauty. Numerous lakes and sand bunkers are positioned to provide good shot values, without being overly penal.
Water hazards come into play in some shape or form on 15 of the holes, and around 70 sand bunkers are
situated greenside or along the rolling fairways. Trees are not overly dense, but are positioned strategically -
particularly on the longer holes. There are four par fives that are medium to long in length, and three of the four par threes play to 200 + yards from the back tees.
Four sets of tee areas play to distances and slopes measuring 7200 yards/137 slope, 6653 yards/132 slope,
6131 yards/126 slope for men and a whopping 146 for women, and 5391 yards with a 128 slope for ladies
playing from the forward tees. Unless familiar with the course, we recommend the white tees for the average
golfer - as the 126 slope is a fair enough challenge. All players will appreciate the large green complexes,
outfitted with quick and true rolling Tif Eagle Ultra Dwarf Bermuda. It may get some getting used to (they are
quick year round), but these surfaces are an absolute joy to putt on. With over 4 acres of putting surfaces, even
novices should be able to find the short stuff at Abacoa, but those skilled a lag putting have a distinct advantage.
The putting surfaces are relatively flat with some back to front slope, and there generally is lots of fringe, ample room in front of the green for low running chips and bump & run approaches.
The 20,000 square foot Mediterranean-style clubhouse features a pro shop, Grille Room & Lounge (serving
lunch daily), locker rooms with showers, plus banquet/outing facilities that can accommodate up to 225 guests.
There also is an outdoor patio with splendid golf course views. Each golf cart is equipped with weather covers
and with ProLink GPS - providing accurate info from tee to green as well as hole diagrams and hazard locations.
There also are 100, 150 and 200 yard blocks (& 250 on par fives) positioned in the center of the fairways.
Abacoa is a premier golf experience, with rates for non-Florida residents topping out at the $130-$140 price
range in 2006. The contoured fairways and accessible green complexes make this a wonderful experience for
all levels of players. Highly recommended! Memberships and junior golf programs are available. Practice
facilities with a targeted grass range and putting green are also on property. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
