Florida Golf Course Review

Champions Club at Julington Creek

Champions Club at Julington Creek

The Champions Club at Julington Creek is a Steve Melnyk, traditionally designed  championship course that is always open for public play. With prime rates including cart topping out at just over $50 in 2006, this is also one of Jacksonville's top golf values. Golfers will find that the fine level of conditioning from tee to green is matched by friendly service and a cooperative staff, which makes a round of golf here a very enjoyable experience.

Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6908 yards/132 slope, 6401 yards/127 slope, 5888 yards/121 slope and 5028 yards with a slope of 116. On property are comprehensive practice facilities including a grass range, short game area with sand bunkers, and 2 practice greens. The clubhouse features a pro shop, lounge and dining room, locker rooms with showers and banquet/outing facilities that can accommodate 100 guests.

The course is an interesting design, with tree line fairways (some rather tight) and large sloping greens. Bunkering is understated but strategic, with most holes providing 2 or 3 sand traps located greenside or near the landing zones on the fairways. Sand waste areas are also part of the design. Water comes into play on just a couple holes on each nine. The green complexes are often slightly raised with mild mounding, but with open fronts.

Golfers of all skill levels should be able to choose a tee box that matches their game. There are four sets that are fairly evenly interspersed, with distances and slopes playing to 6908 yards/132 slope, 6401 yards/127 slope, 5888 yards/121 slope for men and 130 for women, and 5028 yards with a slope of 112 for men and 116 for women hitting from the forward tees. On course yardage markers are posted on the cart paths and fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, with color coded flags indicating the front, middle or back pin placements.
