CLEARWATER GOLF CLUB (727-446-9501)
Florida Golf Course Review 11/18/06
Clearwater Golf Club is a par 71, 6225 yard championship course that is located in downtown Clearwater, just 5
minutes from Clearwater Beach. TifDwarf greens, well conditioned Bermuda fairways that are tree lined, plus a
meandering creek, provide character and quality to a layout that is one of the top golf values in Pinellas County.
On our mid-November visit, the course was in wonderful shape from tee to green. Golfers will appreciate the
thoughtful maintenance and value oriented pricing, for a course that is both enjoyable and challenging. Four sets
of tees provide an opportunity for players of all skill levels to choose a set that fits their game. While not over long
, this design features challenges in the form of raised green complexes and sloping putting surfaces.
The tips play to 6225 with a slope rating of 125, while alternate sets measure 5947 yards/122 slope, 5312
yards/115 slope for men and 125 for women, and 5448 yards with a slope of 114 for men and 123 for ladies
hitting from the front tees. Water is present in some shape or form on 11 of the holes, but only comes prominently
in play on five. Thirty seven sand bunkers are located about the course, with most of them situated greenside.
There are some parallel fairways, with rows of trees separating the playing surfaces. While trees definitely shape
the holes on this layout, there is generally abundant room on the fairly levels fairways. 100, 150 and 200 yard
stakes line both sides of the fairways on all par fours and fives, and small markers on the flagsticks indicate front, middle and back hole locations on the small to medium size greens.
On property is a large clubhouse with pro shop, lockers and showers for members only, a spacious
restaurant/lounge, plus banquet/outing facilities. There is a grass range, short game area with sand bunker, and
putting green. The scorecards provide hole diagrams, which are helpful in locating the water hazards and sand traps.
Clearwater is the oldest course in the area, and is quite traditional as a parkland design. For the money (under
$50 including cart for non residents prime time in 2007) - this is extremely good value - and is a golf experience
that we can highly recommend, especially for an initial round on an extended golf trip. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct lin to their website by clicking here.
