COPPERHEAD GOLF CLUB ( 239-369-8200)
Florida Golf Course Review 12/12/04 photos updated March, 2008
CopperHead Golf Club near Fort Myers is a Gordon Lewis design featuring island tees, whispering pines and
elevated greens, along a terrain that is distinctively different from typical layouts in the Lehigh Acres area. The
front side presents pine-lined fairways with environmentally protected natural areas, reminiscent of the close-by
Everglades. On the back golfers will encounter wider landing areas on the abundant fairways, but greenside
shots will demand accuracy on approaches to the well protected putting surfaces. Generally speaking, the greens are oversized and mildly undulating.
Five sets of tees play to yardages and slopes measuring 6680 yards/136 slope, 6163 yards/129 slope, 5729
yards/125 slope, 5261 yards/118 slope for men and 124 for women, and 4687 yards with a slope of 114. While
not overly long, the layout does feature a couple of monster four pars - the 444 yard seventh and the 472 yard
13th. With the exception of the 249 yard 14th, the par threes are reasonably short and quite score-able.
Accuracy is the name of the game on this challenging design, especially with water in play on 13 holes, including a couple of forced carries.
On course golfers will find color coded pin placements that indicate front, middle and back hole locations. 150
yard stakes are visible on both sides of the fairways on all par fours and fives, and red, white and blue markers
indicate the 100, 150 and 200 yard areas. Cart paths are also marked, as are the tee boxes. Hole diagrams on
the scorecards will help golfers locate the water hazards, and the 69 sand bunkers/waste areas that dot the property.
With competitive pricing ($55 including cart prime time in January 2005), Copperhead is a good value for the Ft
Myers area. On property is a full service snack bar and pro shop, along with driving range and practice green.
