DUNES GOLF AND TENNIS CLUB - Sanibel Island (239-472-2535)
Florida Golf Course Review 12/12/04 -Photos updated March, 2008
The Dunes Golf & Tennis Club is a par 70 Mark McCumber design situated on the Southeastern tip of Sanibel
Island. Set amidst a wildlife sanctuary sanctioned by the Audubon Cooperative Society, The Dunes is the
island's premier golf destination. This resort course features four sets of tees that play to 5578 yards/123 slope,
5249 yards/111 slope, 4854 yards/106 slope and 4002 yards with a 111 slope for women. Not a long course,
the Dunes is noted for its exceptional conditioning and playability - making it a favorite for visitors to the area. Visually, the course and property are stunning!
This picturesque environment is home to abundant wildlife, including alligators, blue herons, cranes, bald eagles
and osprey. On property is an aquatic driving range and practice green that is situated in front of the clubhouse.
There is a fully stocked pro shop, the Greenside Grill Bar and Restaurant, banquet and catering for groups of up
to 250 people, and changing areas with showers for men and women. Memberships are available, and include use of 7 Har Tru tennis courts, a heated swimming pool and other amenities.
On course sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and yardage blocks are posted at 100, 150
and 200 yards on the fairways. Color coded flags indicate the daily hole locations, and each par three provides
yardage blocks as well. The five par threes here are quite memorable. Every hole on the layout features water in
play, as the meticulously manicured fairways are often flanked by lakes or ponds. This is not a course where one
can grip it and rip it off the tee. Frequently, it is necessary to lay up to precise landing zones to set up for
approaches over water. Accuracy is also important greenside, though many green complexes present open
fronts. There are only 19 sand bunkers on the course - but some are quite large and all are strategically located.
This is a lush golfing environment, with extensive tropical foliage including an abundance of palm trees and
manicured landscaping. The course meanders through an upscale residential community, in an absolutely
gorgeous area. The tifdwarf Bermuda greens and 419 fairways present excellent playing conditions. Land on the
small to medium putting surface and 1 or 2 putts should be the norm, as contours are mild in nature. We highly
recommend a round here! For more information, visit our page for the property on our web catalog of courses to play in the region - with direct link to their website by clicking here
