GOLF CLUB AT FLEMING ISLAND (904-269-1440)
Florida Golf Course Review 2/20/06
The Golf Club at Fleming Island is a traditional Florida layout that accentuates the area's beautiful natural
features, while providing good variety in design between the front and back nines. Designed by Ponte Vedra
Beach resident Bobby Weed, the course plays challenging yet fair, and is meticulously maintained from tee to
green. In 2003, it was named the "Fifth Best New Affordable Public Course in the United States" by Golf Digest, and also served as a US Open Qualifying site that year.
Five sets of tee areas provides golfers with options of playing to distances and slopes measuring 6801
yards/136 slope, 6575 yards/134 slope, 6105 ayrds/129 slope, 5658 yards/114 slope, and 4881 yards with a
116 slope from the forward tees. On property are two practice greens and a targeted grass range. The clubhouse features a pro shop plus restaurant/lounge with outdoor patio.
The front side promotes a grip it and rip it mentality with wide fairways bordered by pines and ponds that lead to
large, raised green complexes. The back nine is replete with natural marshes and thick woodlands, creating
tighter landing zones that play into a shot-makers hand. The group of par threes (two of them pictured below) on
this course are beautiful and challenging - with the character of each established with varying hazards. The long
narrow bunker complexes found throughout the layout also help the course to establish a unique character. In total, 80 sand bunkers are strategically placed along the fairways or are situated greenside.
Water comes into play seven holes on the front side, and just two holes on the back. The raised green
complexes can be challenging, with bunkers, swales and collection areas creating some tough up and down
situations. Most fairways are lined with ponds and trees, creating some beautiful golf holes. The course is well
marked with 150 ayrd stakes on all par fours and fives, and with sprinkler heads that are measured to the center of the green. Color coded flags indicate the day's hole locations.
The Golf Club at Fleming Island presents a wonderful golf experience, with rates that will not break the pocket
book. We highly recommend a round here. For more information, visit our page for the course, with map & directions plus a direct link to their website by clicking here.
