HERON BAY GOLF CLUB (formerly TPC Heron Bay) ( 954-796-2000)
Florida Golf Course Review 12/10/05
Former host to the PGA Tour's Honda Classic, the Heron Bay Golf Club is a four star (Golf Digest Places to Play
) Mark McCumber layout designed on 210 windswept acres situated along the edge of the Florida Everglades.
While utilizing the natural "lay of the land" McCumber and Associates employ sand and water to direct golfers around the layout, without making the hazards overly penal. Trees rarely come into play.
On property is a full service clubhouse with pro shop, locker rooms with showers for men and women, a
restaurant/lounge and snack shop, plus outing facility for corporate and special events that can facilitate groups
of up to 200 people. In fact, the facility - with its customer service and tournament management team, presents
one of the most corporate and group friendly atmospheres in South Florida. The practice area opens at 7 am
daily and includes a double-sided, targeted grass range plus putting/chipping green, with lessons of all types
available from PGA certified instructors. Those looking for accommodations or stay and play packages will find
resort style amenities at nearby Coral Springs Marriott Resort and Convention Center, and at the Marriott Harbor
Beach in Ft Lauderdale. For an informational page for the Marriott at Coral Springs, with plentiful photos plus a direct link to their website, click here
Five sets of tees play to yardages and slopes measuring 7268 yards/133 slope, 6781 yards/128 slope, 6123
yards/122 slope, 5580 yards/114 slope and 4961 yards with a slope of 113 for ladies playing from the forward
sets. 7 holes have water hazards in play along the perimeters, with no forced carries. Players need to plan their
tee shots however, as fairway bunkers are plentiful. Together with the greenside traps which often frame the sides of the putting complexes, there are 95 soft white sand bunkers along the layout.
On course 150 yard stakes are visible on all par fours and fives, and cart paths have permanent measurements
posted every 25 yards from 200 to 75 yards away. Each tee box provides yardage boxes and sprinkler heads
along the course are also measured to the center of the green. All carts are new in 2007 and provide a GPS system onboard.
The topography is fairly level and the surrounding wetlands and water hazards are not prominently in play,
making this a playable round for all levels of golfers. A good sand game will certainly help to keep the scores low
. This course has hosted the Honda Classic (1997-2002) and was named as a "Top Ten Places You Can Play"
in Florida by Golf Magazine. It is always open for public play, with rates including cart in 2006 topping out at
around $100. For more info, visit our page for the Heron Bay Golf Club, with direct link to their website by clicking here. Viewers will find aerial views plus diagrams and descriptions of each hole on the TPC website.
