IRONHORSE COUNTRY CLUB (561-624-5551)
Florida Golf Course Review 12/10/05
Ironhorse is a beautiful Arthur Hills championship design featuring large teeing areas, flowing fairways and mildly
elevated, undulating green complexes. Forty five sand bunkers dot the layout, and water comes into play on 15
holes - including a lake which runs for over 1 mile forming a shoreline on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes. Lush
conditions, abundant preserves and wetlands, and a variety of indigenous wildlife make this the "Hidden Gem of Palm Beach County".
A magnificent 27,200 square foot clubhouse offers three dining rooms featuring sumptuous cuisine, a well
stocked pro shop, locker rooms with showers, and spectacular 180 degree panoramic views of the 1st, 10th and
18th holes. Members enjoy wonderful swimming and tennis facilities, and the practice area includes a 30,000
square foot tee area leading to targeted greens, a bi-level putting green, and a short game area with sand
bunker and a variety of slopes and mounds. Individual and group lessons of various intensities (including on-course playing lessons) are available.
Five sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6855 yards/143 slope, 6367 yards/132 slope, 5889
yards/124 slope, 5536 yards with a 136 slope for women, and 5128 with a slope of 128 for ladies playing from
the forward sets. Though not an overly long layout, the slope ratings are quite high due to the numerous sand and
water hazards, tree lined fairways and raised green complexes that can create some tricky up and downs.
The 4 par threes (photos of two are featured below) all have water in play, but are score-able as the 15th-18th
handicaps. The back to back par five 5th and 6th holes combine with the challenging water-lined 410 yard par
four 4th to create the toughest stretch on the course. The 17th and 18th are also a challenging pair of finishing holes, as lakes squeeze the landing areas off the tee and on the approaches.
Ironhorse is a masterfully created golf course, with excellent conditioning and beautiful golf holes. Multiple tees
and elevated greens provide a challenging yet fair test of golf for players of all skill levels. Yardages are posed
on the fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, and sprinkler heads are also measured to the center of the green. Pin placement sheets are posted on each cart, to indicate the day's hole locations.
The course has been selected as one of the Top 15 Courses in Florida and was honored as one of the 50 best
development courses in the United States by Golfweek Magazine. The wetlands and ponds create an excellent
wildlife habitat, and visitors may be able to observe Bald Eagles, herons and cranes in abundance. For more info on the property, visit our page for Ironhorse, with direct link to their website by clicking here.
