SOUTH HAMPTON GOLF CLUB (904-548-0000)
Florida Golf Course Review 2/20/06
The Golf Club at South Hampton is one of several golf courses in NE Florida that are owned and operated by
Hampton Golf - known for high quality and affordable rates. This Mark McCumber design features a wooded
terrain with manicured fairways that are flanked by mature oaks and pines. Contoured bunkering and scenic lakes and wetlands provide plentiful hazards on this fair yet challenging layout.
Golfers can choose from 6 sets of tees that play to 6952 yards/133 slope, 6479 yards/132 slope, 6005
yards/123 slope, 5462 yards/111 slope for men and 124 for women, 4784 yards with a slope of 118 for women -
and an alternate set for juniors and beginners that measures 2846yards. On course yardage markers are
provided at 100, 150 and 200 yards and sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green. Scorecards post information on the front, middle or back pin placements.
On property are complete practice facilities that include a grass range, putting green and short game area.
Instruction of all kinds is available through the Hampton Golf Academy. The clubhouse features a pro shop,
restaurant/lounge plus banquet and outing facilities. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily, and Sunday
Brunch is a specialty. The course is a Mark McCumber championship links style design that meanders through an upscale residential community, in a rather secluded golf environment.
The fairways are quite generous, but sand bunkers sculpted into fairway mounding can create some challenging
recovery situations. Raised green complexes are large and contoured, with deep sand traps often situated on
one or both side. During our late February visit, the course was in fine condition, and the landscaping with
pampas and tropical foliage around the cart paths, tees and green complexes, made our experience all the
more enjoyable. Like many north Florida golf courses, South Hampton allows the Bermuda rough to go dormant during the winter months.
This property is located on County Road 210, west of I-95 and minutes from downtown Jacksonville,
Baymeadows, Ponte Vedra and from the World Golf Village in St Augustine. For more info, visit our page for the
