MAGNOLIA POINT GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB (904-269-9276)
Florida Golf Course Review
Magnolia Point in Green Cove Springs, easily accessible for Jacksonville and St. Augustine, is one of the area's only 27-hole golf facilities. Located off Hwy 17 just north of the
bridge crossing west of the St Johns River, Magnolia Point is a semi-private course that is open for public play. With new ownership and management the former private 18-hole
facility has undergone renovations to the course (including the addition of nine holes) and to the clubhouse - with the addition of the new 28th Hole sports bar.
The golf course is the centerpiece of a facility that includes a pro shop, snack bar area with sandwiches and beverages, plus complete restaurant/lounge with banquet and outing
capabilities. Also on property are a targeted grass range, putting green and short game area with sand bunker. The Mark McCumber designed layout features fairways lined with
mature pines, magnolias and moss draped oaks that play from a mix of level and elevated tee areas.
The Bermuda fairways and rough were dormant on our late February visit, but the tees and mildly sloping greens were finely manicured and in great shape. Golfers can choose
from five sets of tee boxes that play to distances measuring between 6904 and 4908 yards, with slope ratings varying between 141 and 119. The photos in this review are of the
White and Blue nines which are the two longest of the three nines. The island green on the Red nine is the only forced carry over water.
We found Magnolia Point to be fair yet challenging, with enough hazards to keep the round interesting. Water comes into play on 7 holes on the Red, 6 holes on the White and 5
holes on the Blue course. The greens are often protected by mounding and bunkers, but the fronts are often playable and there is generally room for some error on the
approaches. There are nearly 100 bunkers in total, with many situated along the landing areas of the well maintained fairways. On course 150 stakes are posted on all par fours
and fives, as well as yardage markers at 100 and 200. Pin placement info is provided for on the scorecards.
