Florida Golf Course Review

Imperial Lakewoods Golf Club - Florida Golf Course

Moccasin Wallow Golf Club (formerly Imperial Lakewoods Golf Club), conveniently located 30 minutes (or less) from St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Bradenton and Tampa, opened for play in 1987 and was promptly ranked as one of the area's best courses by Golf Digest. The layout is situated on more than 500 beautifully wooded acres with 16 lakes, majestic maples, large oaks, swaying palms, and rolling terrain.

On property there is a par 72 championship golf course, clubhouse, and a practice facility including an aqua range, putting green, and a short game area for chipping and sand practice. The clubhouse features a pro shop, bar, the Moc Bar & Grill serving breakfast and lunch daily, and a dining room which can be reserved for banquets and outings for over 100 people.

Golfers of all skill levels can be challenged depending on the tee boxes they choose at Moccasin Wallow. There are five sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 7010 yards/136 slope, 6739 yards/132 slope, 6191 yards/126 slope, 5671 yards/ 118 slope, and 5232 yards with a slope of 117 for women playing the forward tees.  From the tips the front and back nine are very similar in distance in different ways. Each of the five par fours on the front play 400 plus yards, while the back features some shorter par fours and two 600 yard par fives including the signature hole #18.

The course is well marked with yardage info provided down the middle of the fairway from 200, 150, and 100 yards to the center of the green. Markers on the flagsticks indicate front, middle, and back pin placements. The scorecards include small diagrams of each par four and par five providing useful information and distances to bunkers and water hazards. In total there are 42 sand bunkers, and 15 holes feature water in the form of lakes and ponds.

From the tees there is a nice mixture of wide open landing zones with some room for error, and some tightly tree lined dog-legs where strategy and ball placement will come into play. For the most part golfers can expect an even lie on the fairways or a difficult position if they land in the rough. Greens are guarded well by bunkers and mounding to the sides and back leaving them vulnerable to bump and run opportunities from head on. The small-medium sized putting surfaces have a decent slope so pin placement info is important and accurate iron play will make a big difference on the score card.
