Florida Golf Course Review

Stonegate at Solovita-Cypress Course

Stonegate at Solivita now provides two high quality and reasonably priced 18-hole championship courses that are open for public play. The initial course is now called the Oaks, and the Cypress Course completes the dynamic duo. This layout features ample fairways with meandering bunkers that are large but generally low lipped and non-penal in nature.

Water comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes on the Cypress Course, providing aesthetic beauty and creating the need for some accurate iron play. The par three, though not overly long, are particularly beautiful and are especially challenging from the back tees - with considerable forced carries. There also are 46 soft sand bunkers located near the landing zones on the fairways or situated greenside.

The green complexes are raised and sloped, with mounding and sand traps making for some difficult recoveries. Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements - which is good knowledge to have on these oversized, undulating putting surfaces. The cart paths are marked and blocks on the fairways also provide measurements to the center of the green from 200, 150 and 100 yards out. Four sets of tees play to distances measuring 6760, 6338, 5869 and 4822 yards. Slope and course ratings were not available on our early January 2006 visit.

The course meanders through an upscale residential community, with some long cart rides between holes. The terrain is quite rolling, with ample landing zones on the fairways and tightly guarded green complexes. Wood retaining walls are present on a few of the water holes and are especially prominent on the par three 16th and par five 18th. The three closing holes are quite memorable, with expansive bunkers and formidable water hazards making these three the 9th, 5th and 1st handicapped holes.

On property is a full scale practice facility with targeted grass range, putting green and practice bunkers. The clubhouse includes a pro shop and snack bar area with beverages plus hot and cold sandwiches. The Cypress Course is an attractive layout, and provides a nice compliment to the Oaks Course.
