The Heights is a 27-hole golf course located in Lakeland - centrally located to spring training and minor league baseball complexes, with easy access for visitors to Central Florida
. Originally designed in 1925, this property has experienced many renovations, including the opening of a re-built clubhouse in 2001.
Facilities now include a pro shop, restaurant that is open for breakfast and lunch daily, plus banquet and outing set-ups. There also is an outdoor patio and full bar, with big screen
television. Practice facilities include a grass range and putting green. There are three sets of tee boxes to choose from at The Heights. The tips range from 6,345 to 6,517 yards
depending on which combination of the 27 holes you play; the whites 5,937 to 6,125, and the ladies 5,374 to 5,551. The combination of the A and B nines has a slope of 122 (tips)
118 (whites), 121 (reds), B-C 123 / 119 / 120, and C-A 123 / 120 / 120.
The photos taken for this review were of the A-B layout, which features plenty of room on the tree lined fairways. The generous landing zones lead to gently raised green complexes
with small to medium sized putting surfaces that are mildly sloping. Over the 27 holes golfers with encounter 55 sand bunkers plus water hazards that come into play in some
shape or form on 16 holes. The green complexes are approachable, with the sand traps usually located to the sides.
The terrain is quite level, with landscaped grounds that include a generous amount of palm trees and lakes. There is a nice mix of tree lined and open golf holes, with a limited
number of doglegs - golfers can generally see all they will encounter from the tee boxes. On course yardage markers are posted on the fairways and cart paths at 100, 150 and
200 yards, with a 150 yard stake present on all par fours and fives. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green and color coded flags indicate the front, middle or back
hole locations.
The ladies Future Tour visited The Heights for their 4-day event just prior to our arrival, and the course was in excellent shape during our early March visit. This is a walker-friendly
layout, and as the slope rating indicate - a course that can be enjopyed by all levels of players.
