UNIVERSITY PARK GOLF CLUB (941-359-9999)
Florida Golf Course Review
University Park Country Club is a 4-star (Golf Digest Places to Play for 13 years in a row as of 2011) 27-hole semi private championship course that is the centerpiece of what the
national Association of Home Builders dubbed the "Best Community design in America". The daily fee player is offered the impeccable service, conditioning and amenities that
rivals a private club experience.
In operation for over 20 years now, University Park is annually recognized as one of the region's best by discerning golfers and in independent reader's surveys. Sarasota
Magazine has rated the property as the "Best Place to Play Golf" every year since 1993! We can see why - the 27 holes were finely manicured from tee to green on our late April visit
, and the amenities and service are awesome.
On property is a full service clubhouse with pro shop, restaurant/lounge, plus locker rooms with showers for men and women. There also is a snack bar with outdoor patio for take
out or take with orders for those in a hurry to get on the course. The practice facilities include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker, plus putting green.
Golfers can choose from 6 sets of tees that allow players of all skill levels to enjoy a round. The tips measure up to 7247 yards/139 slope and alternate sets play to distances and
slopes ranging from 6716 yards/74.2 slope to 4949 yards118 slope. With 27 holes on property players can mix and match to enjoy different configurations. The images in this
review are of the original 18 holes - the holes are simply numbered 1 thru 27, instead of attaching a name to each nine.
In total 101 white sand bunkers are situated near landing zones or greenside on the 27 holes and water comes into play on 15 holes, mostly on the perimeter. There are some
forced carries, especially from the back tees. Most fairways are tree lined but wide, and are gently rolling in nature. The green complexes are mostly raised with mounding along
the sides and backs, and with most of the fronts open to receive a variety of chips and pitches. The course is well marked with sprinkler heads and 150 yard stakes on the fairways
of all par fours and fives, and 100, 150 and 200 markers on both the fairways and cart paths. Positional flags on the greens indicate front, middle or back hole locations.
